Black Copper Maran chick
Please read the description in its entirety before ordering. All day old chick orders are pre-orders!
All orders of chicks and hatching eggs are pre-orders. You will receive a text or email from us when your order is ready for pick up or being shipped. We do not ship chicks; only eggs! Baby chicks have to be picked up locally. To place an order, select the quantity desired and add to the cart. Chicks are sold unsexed. When you place your order we will contact to you let you know when we are setting the eggs for your chicks and give you an anticipated hatch date. When your chicks hatch, we vaccinate them, unless requested otherwise, and reach out to you to schedule your appointment for pick up.
Once you are notified that your birds are ready for check out, it is up to you to have their coop ready and make arrangements to pick them up by the deadline agreed upon. Should life happens and you are not able to take care of the birds you pre-ordered, we will give you credit for the amount paid up-to-date for a future purchase. Please understand we are not able to refund any orders/pre-orders. The only time, a refund applies is when we are not able to deliver the product (Ex. theft, fertility issues, hatch rate issue, fire, flock demise, bird illness, death of breeder, etc). There is a $5 fee for each bird, each day that is here past the deadline. No exceptions. You must order a minimum of 5 chicks and no more than 10. If you want to order more than 10 chicks, please reach out to me first.
A fee of $20 is added to any order that does not meet the minimum purchase requirement. This fee will be collected during pickup. Orders are filled by the order in which payment is received. Please allow up to 48 hours to hear back from us, especially if you are ordering on a Friday night or over the weekend. Appointments are scheduled for Saturdays most of the year. If you are ordering on a Saturday and expecting to pick up on the same day, please note available slots fill up quickly during the week, so sometimes, we are fully booked on Saturdays. Please wait to hear back from us before heading to our farm. We will contact you within 48 hours to schedule your pick up or anticipated pick up date, depending on the birds’ age group you purchased.
Feeding: We feed Non GMO Nature’s Best Organic starter grower (this is a non-medicated feed). We provide fresh water daily with a tbs of apple cider vinegar (Brags raw and unfiltered, “with the mother”)
Vaccination Policy
We make no guarantee that the vaccinations will protect your poultry 100% from getting the disease, but it is a good preventative step. Marek's vaccine is an injection and will not be noticeable on the chicks.
Cancellation/Return Policy
If life happens and you decide to cancel an order that has not yet been filled, 50% of your payment is refundable and the other 50% will be issued as a store credit for a future purchase with us. We do not issue full refunds. If you need to cancel your order, please email us with your order number and cancellation reason. In the event we are unable to fill an order, we reserve the right to cancel it, and a full refund will be issued.
Our Black Copper Marans
We have a diverse French Black Copper Marans breeding stock from different experienced breeders we reached out through our membership in the Maran Club. We breed primarily for health (that’s my number one goal with this breed other than egg color). In my experience, I found that birds bred for egg color were more prone to disease and early death. I wanted to build a line of resilient, robust, yet conforming birds. I do not help chicks that struggle to come out of the shell or select birds that have displayed any signs of distress during their juvenile stage. For my breeding program, I choose birds that have good conformation, as close to the SOP as possible. My second goal for this breed is the SOP. Again, I find that a lot of people are breeding for egg color these days, but their birds have low quality conformation. Egg color takes generations upon generations of breeding and lots and lots of patience on the part of the breeder. We are currently a 6-8 on the Maran color chart. That comes in with a cost. Our chicks are $15 each. They are sold unsexed and in quantities of 5 or more per person. Egg color also varies throughout the season. Maran eggs are used by many world-renowned chefs. They are know for exquisite taste and bright yolk. The French Black Copper Marans lay the darkest brown eggs of any variety of chicken, though my Wheaten Marans are now laying just as dark!. We have great egg color on the Marans Egg Color Chart. We sell Black Copper Marans chicks, hatching eggs, and occasionally young started pullets, cockerels, and roosters. French Black Copper Marans were developed in France and are famous for their chocolate brown eggs. The English standard calls for clean legs, we breed to the French standard of feathered legs. French Black Copper Marans are bred for egg color not for high egg production. The slower the egg is passed the more the egg is colored. However, Marans are good on egg production.
